How Booking a Private Chef Works. Chef Marcel's Step-by-Step Guide

Chef Marcel provides a premium private chef service across Cambridgeshire, Norfolk, Oxfordshire, Lincolnshire, Yorkshire, Northamptonshire, and the wider North and West London areas — bringing restaurant-quality dining directly to your home, venue, or event space.
If you've ever wondered what the process of booking a private chef actually looks like, this guide walks you through every step — from your very first message to us, right through to the moment we leave your kitchen spotless.
Step 1 — Your Initial Enquiry
The first step is simply getting in touch. Whether you're based in Norfolk, North London, or anywhere across our service area, we welcome all enquiries and aim to respond as quickly as possible. During peak periods — particularly at weekends when private chef events keep us busy across the region — it may take a day or two to reply, but every single enquiry matters to us and we always follow up.
Step 2 — Understanding Your Private Chef Event
Once we connect, our priority is learning exactly what you need. No two private dining experiences are alike — a birthday dinner in Cambridgeshire feels very different to a corporate lunch in Oxfordshire or a wedding weekend in Yorkshire. We'll ask:
What's the occasion? Dinner party, birthday, anniversary, wedding, corporate event, hen party, or something else entirely
How many guests? From intimate dinners for two to large celebrations for twenty or more
Where is the event? Your home, a rented venue, a country house, holiday cottage, or private estate
What are your tastes and dietary requirements? Allergies, preferences, cuisine style
What is your budget? We work across a range of budgets and will always be transparent
Our private chef service covers events across Cambridgeshire, Norfolk, Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire, Oxfordshire, Yorkshire, and North and West London — and we're used to working in a wide variety of settings, from city apartments to rural estate kitchens.
Step 3 — Bespoke Menu Proposals
Based on your brief, Chef Marcel will create a tailored selection of menus for you to choose from. These are designed around your event, your guests' tastes, the season, and your budget — not off-the-shelf packages. We give you plenty of time to circulate the menus amongst your party, gather everyone's thoughts, and come back to us. A great private dining experience starts with a menu everyone is genuinely excited about.
Step 4 — Securing Your Date
Once you've chosen your menu and are happy to proceed, we'll ask for a small deposit to hold your date. This is essential — private chef bookings in Cambridgeshire, London, and across our wider service areas are in high demand, and we receive a significant number of enquiries at any time. Without a deposit, we cannot guarantee your date. Once paid, it's yours, and we begin planning in earnest.
Step 5 — Finalising Your Private Dining Menu
With your booking confirmed, we work through the finer details together — refining the menu, accommodating any dietary requirements, allergies, or last-minute changes. Whether it's a guest with a gluten intolerance in Norfolk or a vegan at a dinner party in North London, we adapt seamlessly. This is your event, and every detail of the food will reflect that.

Step 6 — Venue Assessment
As the date approaches, we'll ask about the venue. If it's a rented property, holiday cottage, or private hire space — especially common for events in Oxfordshire, the Cotswolds, Lincolnshire, or rural Yorkshire — we may ask for photos or an online listing so we can properly assess the kitchen. We'll look at oven capacity, counter space, available equipment, and working area so we can plan our setup effectively and arrive fully prepared.
Step 7 — Final Confirmation
A couple of days before your private chef event, we'll be in touch for a final check-in. We'll confirm nothing has changed and agree on our arrival time — typically two hours before your desired mealtime, giving us everything we need to be fully ready when your guests sit down.
On the Day — Preparing for Your Private Chef
To ensure your private dining experience runs perfectly, we ask a few simple things before we arrive:
Keep pets and young children away from the kitchen during cooking — for everyone's safety
Clear as much counter and kitchen space as possible for us to work comfortably
Empty the dishwasher so we can use it throughout the evening
Have crockery, glasses, and cutlery clean and accessible so we can begin immediately
Table setting is entirely your call — do it yourself if you'd like that personal touch, or leave it to us. Either way, it's taken care of.
The Private Dining Experience — During Your Event
Once we arrive, we unload and get straight to work. Throughout the meal, Chef Marcel will come out to personally present each course — introducing the dish, the ingredients, and the thought behind it — before stepping back and letting your guests enjoy the moment. We are there when you need us and completely unobtrusive when you don't. We may check in quietly to make sure everything is to your satisfaction, and in our experience across hundreds of private chef events from London to Yorkshire, it always is.
We can also assist with drinks service, so the whole experience feels truly effortless from start to finish.

After the Meal — We Leave It Exactly as We Found It
Once the last dish is served, we clear everything away, wash up, put everything back in its rightful place, and leave your kitchen exactly as we found it — clean, tidy, and ready for the next morning. You don't lift a finger.
The full experience — from our arrival to departure — typically takes three to four hours, depending on the size of the party and the menu. It is, in every sense, a complete service.
